چکیده

In this paper we present preliminary results of a turbulence monitoring campaign at the Mount John University Observatory using a bread-board based SCIDAR (SCIntillation Detection And Ranging) system. Simultaneous SCIDAR and generalised SCIDAR data are captured and used to quantify the turbulence at the site. Initial results, including estimates of key turbulence parameters, are presented and discussed.

THE ‘THINARRAY’; A LIGHTWEIGHT, ULTRA-THIN (8 mm OD) TOWED ARRAY FOR USE FROM SMALL VESSELS OF OPPORTUNITY

Conventional towed arrays are typically 40-80 mm in diameter and weigh >1 kg/m, requiring facilities unavailable on small vessels and inconvenient for submarines. The large diameter is needed to suppress turbulence noise. As the diameter of the array hose increases, so does the weight as the square of this dimension, so that the associated strain relief, bending radius, storage and other operat...

A Distributed Object Infrastructure for Interaction and Steering

This paper presents the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of DIOS (Distributed Interactive Object Substrate), an interactive object infrastructure to enable the runtime monitoring, interaction and computational steering of parallel and distributed applications. DIOS enables application objects (data structures, algorithms) to be enhanced with sensors and actuators so that they ...

Advances in thermal infrared remote sensing for land surface modeling

Over 10 years ago, John Norman and co-authors proposed a thermal-based land surface modeling strategy that treated the energy exchange and kinetic temperatures of the soil and vegetated components in a unique ‘‘Two-Source Model’’ (TSM) approach. The TSM formulation addresses key factors affecting the convective and radiative exchange within the soil–canopy–atmosphere system, focusing on the rel...

A contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of Fourier series via an Applied Analysis standpoint; an application in turbulence spectrum of eddies

In the present paper, we shall attempt to make a contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of the harmonic decomposition of an arbitrary continuous function. The basic assumption is that the class of functions that we investigate here, except the verification of Dirichlet's principles, is concurrently able to be expanded in Taylor's representation, over a particular interval of their do...

The critical role of volcano monitoring in risk reduction

Data from volcano-monitoring studies constitute the only scientifically valid basis for short-term forecasts of a future eruption, or of possible changes during an ongoing eruption. Thus, in any effective hazards-mitigation program, a basic strategy in reducing volcano risk is the initiation or augmentation of volcano monitoring at historically active volcanoes and also at geologically young, b...
